When I see beautiful maxi dresses that are not in a petite sizing option, I can get pretty down. Luckily, it’s not the case when I see midi dresses, because I know I can make those work for my petite size of 4’10”. Most become cute maxi dresses. There are a few characteristics I do look for in midi dresses. In this post, I will list those fantastic features of a petite’s dream midi dress.

1) high-low Style
A high-low style dress is where there is a shorter hem at the front compared to the back. This style seems to be flattering on most body types. The high-low style can have a slimming effect and makes a petite look elongated. There’s more attention to the legs, which creates the illusion of more length.
2) V-Neck
I love V-neck style dresses, tops, and sweaters. The V-neck style offers the illusion of having a longer torso. Some say, and I agree, that the style makes you look thinner too.
3) Small prints
When your petite, there is that fear of drowning in you outfit. I try to choose smaller prints. Smaller prints are not as overwhelming and keep you looking long and lean.
4) Fitted bodice (waist)
In the photo below you can see that the bodice was fitted and designed to accentuate the waist. This is something I look for in longer dresses so there is a defined top and bottom.
4) Cuffed sleeves
Since I live in Florida, I tend to pick mostly sleeveless styles. If the dress has long sleeves, then for my shorter arms, I will need cuffed sleeves or ones with elastic to stop the sleeves from going pass my hands. Ideally we should have our long sleeves stop at the wrist, so if you are buying a petite size specific dress, then look for that fit.

Honestly, I wear what I want. Sometimes I follow “rules” and other times I do not. But when I see a dress I like and it matches up to these fantastic features, then it is golden.
